BNHI cuts spending on special materials saving NT$8.3m a year (2010/07/09)
Reported by Chen Li-Ting from Taipei
The BNHI announces a cut on the payment prices of special medical materials. This cut will take effect from August and affect 919 items, including heart defibrillators.
Sheng Mao-Ting, a section chief of the BNHI, said in an interview that the rationale behind the price reduction on special medical materials is the same as the reason for drug price cut. The difference is that drug price cut is a biennial operation, while the price cut on special medical materials is an annual task targeting on items with high usage volume and costs.
This price cut on special medical materials affects many medical departments, including divisions of cardiovascular, chest and urology, etc.
Sheng said that through a survey on hospitals' purchasing prices of special medical materials, the BNHI can calculate the average purchasing price and use it as a basis for price cut.
Sheng said that the price cut could reduce the annual health expenditure by NT$8.3m.
