DOH promises huge improvement in healthcare quality in Hsinchu (2010/07/22)

There will be a huge change in healthcare quality in Hsinchu area. Yesterday, Chang Shan-Chwen, Deputy DOH Minister, visited Chiu Ching-Chun, Hsinchu County Magistrate, and Hsu Ming-Hsai, Hsinchu City Mayor, and informed the heads of Hsinchu area that the DOH is going to allocate NT$80m to help four local hospitals transform into special centers for severe and emergency cases. Furthermore, the DOH Hsinchu Hospital is going to become a branch of the NTUH. In the future, patients with severe conditions will be able to receive high standard care quality locally.
According to a survey conducted by the DOH last year, Hsinchu is in the second-last place in terms of the ratios of hospital beds and physicians per ten thousand people. Despite the fact that Hsinchu County has a high birth rate, there is a shortage of pediatricians. It shows in various surveys that the need of hospital beds and treatments for severe conditions in Hsinchu area is pressing and urgent.
The Deputy DOH Minister expressed that the central government is very concerned about the shortage of healthcare supply in Hsinchu. NT$80m is to be invested in local hospitals to help them transform into special centers dedicated to severe cases. Ton Yen General Hospital is to be specialized in maternity care (including newborns), VGH Chu Tong Branch to be in the treatment of stroke, DOH Chu Tong Hospital to be in ER treatments and Catholic Mercy Hospital to be in severe external injuries. These hospitals will upgrade their hardware and software to provide quality services for severe conditions. Their markets will be clearly segmented.
Chiu Ching-Chun suggested that the DOH could negotiate with the NTUH and Taipei VGH to dispatch physicians to support the healthcare services in Hsinchu. This will boost the public's confidence in local healthcare.
