The 2nd Generation NHI bill will be concluded in August in the extraordinary legislative session. The DOH Minister, Yaung Chih-Liang, held a special press conference to promote the 2nd Generation NHI and clear some myths. He stressed that this is a rare opportunity of reform. Missing it, the implementation of the new system will be more difficult as a local election is approaching. Yaung Chih-Liang pointed out that he will keep fighting for any possibility of the reform; however, if he could not remove the obstacles to the implementation of the 2nd Generation NHI, then he should remove himself from the office.
Yaung Chih-Liang issued a petition paper on the 20th to support the 2nd Generation NHI bill. Apart from thanking the support from President Ma and reviewing the lengthy legislation process of this bill, he also urges all lawmakers and the public to seize the opportunity of reform. "The NHI bill has gone through one presentation, eight runs of article-by-article review and four sessions of political negotiation. If, at the end, it is fruitless, all the efforts and resources putting into the whole process would be in vain," said Yaung.
Yaung Chih-Liang also clarified the 8 major myths of the 2nd Generation NHI system. He requested all DOH staffs to do their best to communicate with every lawmaker in full details. Yaung said that he will hold the office as long as there is still a chance to push through the NHI reform. It would be his incompetence, if the bill fails in the legislation. Under such circumstance, he should resign from the DOH, said Yaung.
