2024/08/24

The Office of the President held the first meeting of the newly established "Healthy Taiwan Promotion Committee" on the 22nd. MOHW Minister Dr Chiu Tai-Yuan presented the vision for a healthy Taiwan, while NHIA Director-General Dr Shih Chung-Liang discussed reforms and optimizations for a sustainable NHI. In addition to the convener and deputy convener, the Committee comprises 9 advisors and 20 members from various health-related professions.

Throughout his election campaign, President Lai repeatedly emphasized that the NHI system is a treasure of Taiwan. As the NHI approaches its 30th anniversary next year, it is crucial for all stakeholders to work together to map out a sustainable future for the system through necessary reforms. The first meeting of the Healthy Taiwan Promotion Committee addressed this issue directly.

As the new government nears its first 100 days in office, President Lai demonstrates his determination to achieve his vision of a healthy Taiwan. The agenda includes initiatives focused on food safety, children's healthcare, nursing workforce policy, a new cancer drug fund, mental health support, healthcare for indigenous people, smart healthcare, and more.

The central government plans to allocate NT$60.7 billion next year to invest in healthcare. This ring-fenced budget will support the New Cancer Drug Fund, a pilot project integrating long-term care and healthcare, and the 888 Project, which provides care and advice for patients with the so-called "3-high conditions."

Regarding mental health, the government will expand access to the Mental Health Support Project by making it available to the younger generation, specifically those aged 15-45. The new government is working at a fast and steady pace to gradually fulfil its pledges.

To improve the working environment for healthcare professionals and increase nursing manpower, the government has formulated various plans that offer rewards and incentives for nurses. This issue is also on the Committee's agenda.

This Committee comprises 9 advisors and 20 members, representing a wide range of health-related professions, and covering various age groups, ethnicities, and regions. The composition reveals that the government aims not only to promote a healthy Taiwan but also a balanced one.
