The incoming President, Tsai Ing-Wen, visited the biopharmaceutical industry in the Nankang Software Park today. In her speech addressed to the industry representatives, she stressed that she has full commitment and confidence to make the biotech industry shining in the global market and to bring benefits to the world.
Tsai highly valued the first meeting with the biotech industry after winning the election. She was accompanied by an expert group, including Chen Chien-Jen, the incoming Vice President, Lin Chuan (the head of the DPP Think Tank), Chang Jing-Sen (the CEO of the DPP Policy Office), Gong Min-Shin (the Vice President of the Taiwan Institute of Economic Research) and Teng Che-Min (Professor of the Taipei Medical University). The group was warmly received by the leaders of the industry, including Chen Wei-Cho (the President of the IBMI), Wong Chi-Huey, Wu Min-Fa and Yang Pan-Chyr, as well as the representatives of 10 biotech companies.
Tsai Ing-Wen said that the reason why she had chosen the biotech industry as her first stop of her national industrial tour is because she wanted to demonstrate the DPP’s commitment to the biotech industry.
Tsai continued that there are two purposes of this visit. Firstly, she wanted to be briefed on the current R&D initiatives so that her government can precisely focus the resources on the research topics.
Secondly, she would like to collect the information about the obstacles faced by the industry. Her government will update the regulations and cut all unnecessary regulatory red tapes for the industry.
Tsai’s visit, accompanied by the heavyweights of her party, exhibited her determination to develop the biotech industry in Taiwan. She vowed to make the biotech industry dazzling in the global market.
Tsai stressed that the new government has confidence to move towards this direction. There will be challenges ahead. However, as long as the government is committed and has a clear direction, there are no storms we cannot weather, said Tsai.
Finally Tsai Ing-Wen promised that the new government will be the strongest support to the industry. Under the new government, the environment will be friendlier, R&D will be encouraged and strengthened, the regulatory system will be reformed, and young talents will be attracted to join the industry. Her government hopes not only to inspire manufacturers, investors and researchers, but also to lay the foundation for the next generation’s economic growth.
