Improving health and wellbeing through commercialization of precision medicine solutions and cross-sector collaboration

As part of the government’s push for the “five plus two” innovative industries plan, biotechnology is poised to become an impactful and fast-growing industry as the issues of declining birthrates and aging populations take hold across the globe. To promote the advantages and capabilities of Taiwan’s biotechnology, the Ministry of Economic Affairs’ Department of Industrial Technology (DoIT) organized the “Do It Today Industrial Technology Exhibition” with the theme of precision medicine and improving health and wellbeing.

          DoIT Deputy Director General Lin Der-sheng said that in reflection of trends in the global biotechnology and medical sectors shifting toward solutions that have greater precision and are more customizable, the exhibition highlights three key areas of precision medicine, long-term care and smart medicine that combines information communication technology (ICT) and biotechnology, two of Taiwan’s strong suits to tap into new opportunities in the market for smart medical devices.

  Taiwan Bio Industry Organization Chairman Johnsee Lee said that the government must shoulder responsibility of assisting businesses develop new products by solving their pain points. That is because the government is capable of withstanding the high risks that comes with balancing the drive for breakthrough and innovative technologies and meeting market demands.

        Industrial Technology Research Institution (ITRI) President Edward Liu said that ITRI is dedicated to the field of precision medicine and the drive to integrate Taiwan’s advantages in the ICT sector with the development of smart medical care. Examples of ITRI’s collaborative efforts that have resulted in the launch of real-world applications include a digital medical care platform built with the National Taiwan University Hospital’s Yunlin Branch, as well as a smart clinical information system built with the Ministry of Health and Welfare Hospital, Changhua, among others.

        Dr. Yang Pan-chyr, an Academician at the Academia Sinica, said that there are many hidden champions in Taiwan’s medical devices industry and urged the government to take stock of Taiwan’s advantages and global opportunities and play the role of business matchmaker to help cash-strapped companies with internationally capable technologies form a national team to tack the global markets.
