Taiwan Food and Drug Administration publishes guidelines on use of medications
2020/04/10

The Taiwan Food and Drug Administration (TFDA) in a recent article reminded the public to thoroughly read drug label information, be aware of potential side effects, act immediately when experiencing side effects and to seek consultation with medical professionals to prevent and mitigate the harmfulness of side effects.

The TFDA said that when taking medication, people should thoroughly read and understand the information listed on drug labels and be aware of possible side effects and other considerations. For example, after taking medication that may cause drowsiness, activities such as driving or operating heavy machinery should be avoided.

After taking medication, if any new discomfort or symptoms develop, one must suspect that the medication has caused some side effects. In addition, if the side effects took some time to develop after medication is administered, additional caution must be taken. In the event of the onset of side effects, patients are advised to review drug label information on possible actions to take. While milder side effects will dissipate with time by stopping the medication in question, others, such as allergic reactions including skin rash and mouth sores, require an immediate visit to the clinic.

When there are questions about medication, patients may ask the medication institution where it was prescribed or consult pharmacists or pharmacist assistants at community pharmacies to have these questions answered by medical professionals.

The TFDA reminds the public that despite the possible side effects, people should not be apprehensive about taking medication to prevent delays in their treatment. With caution, awareness of possible side effects and communication with medical professionals, medication can be taken safely by the public.
