Premier Su urges for vigilant epidemic containment and outlines upcoming stimulus measures
2020/05/15

Premier Su Tseng-chang during an Executive Yuan meeting led his Cabinet in resigning en masse on May 14. Premier Su said that in the past week, Taiwan only had one new COVID-19 case that was imported from abroad and has once again recorded a six-day streak of zero COVID-19 cases as well as 31 consecutive days of zero domestically acquired cases. Among confirmed cases Taiwan, 85 percent have been released from quarantine while recording one of the highest recovery rates in the world, which is telling of Taiwan’s relatively safety from community spread of the virus.

However, Premier Su said that the global spread of COVID-19 has not begun to subside, and some Asian areas have begun showing a second wave of infections. Recently, the number of infections in China and Korea has begun rising again following the easing of lockdowns in the two countries. Therefore, people in Taiwan must remain vigilant, in particular with 210,000 students scheduled to take examinations on May 16-17. Everyone must observe epidemic prevention protocols and exercise self-health management.

Premier Su pointed out that during an Executive Yuan meeting in the previous week, he instructed the Cabinet to speed up the easing of limits on social activities, with the hope that the Taiwan people will be able to quickly resume normalcy in daily lives following the end of the epidemic. The government will also provide assistance to ensure a quick recovery of the countless businesses and industries affected by the epidemic.
