US scholar suggests Taiwan industry should work with international players on post-pandemic market
2020/06/04

Will Taiwan be able to repeat the great achievement in combating COVID-19 in the post-pandemic era? Prof Jason Wang, Associate Professor of Stanford University, suggested that the healthcare industry in Taiwan should collaborate with international manufacturers with a view to combining Taiwan’s health technology advances with international branding advantages.  The industry in Taiwan could apply its expertise to areas such as disease prevention, vaccine development, medical materials or ICT collaboration, said Prof Wang.

Prof Wang analysed the actions implemented by various countries during the COVID-19 outbreak based on Taiwan NHI data.  This paper was published in JAMA, an internationally renowned medical journal.   Prof Wang was invited to have a talk about the trends in medical technology in the post-pandemic era with David Weng, the General Manager of Taiwan Capital Management Corp.

According to David Weng, COVID-19 has a massive impact on the global economics and devastates almost every industry. However, it sparks the development of AI, the internet of things and 5G-technology based remote businesses, as well as creates new demands for healthcare, medical researches and innovative technology services.

Prof Wang expressed that though the healthcare industry has a relatively high entry barrier and long R&D phase, those properties help to prevent players without technical background from entering the industry.  He pointed out that the future trend will be the integration of the healthcare industry with AI data analysis and remote services.

Prof Wang suggested that Taiwan could develop a complete disease combating program by seamlessly integrating the measures for screening, tracing, isolation, monitoring and healthcare services into one package, as well as provide remote diagnosis services and education and training programs for other countries hit hard by the virus.
