2020/06/12

National Development Council (NDC) Kung Ming-hsin on June 10 accepted AmCham Taipei’s 2020 Taiwan White Paper on behalf of the government. During an address, Minister Kung said that Taiwan will not only continue to work on ongoing collaborations but also strive to find new niches for mutual development in the future. Regarding the recommendations outlined in the White Paper, the NDC will continue to communicate with the Chamber and strive to best 2020’s record in terms of issues resolution.

Minister Kung said that while Taiwan was expected to be severely impacted by the U.S.-China trade war and the COVID-19 pandemic, Taiwan has been resilient in the face of these challenges, with its economic growth rate bouncing back to top among the Four Asian Tigers. In addition, since last year, Taiwan’s initiative on encouraging the reshoring of overseas Taiwanese businesses, accelerating investments in small-and-medium sized companies and domestic enterprises have attracted more than NT$1 trillion in investments. Meanwhile, due to cybersecurity concerns, the global supply chain for high-end servers, which China previously played a vital role in, has begun moving back to Taiwan. Minister Kung also spoke about the NDC’s priorities going forward, including biomedicine industry development.

Minister Kung said that exchanges between the U.S. and Taiwan have become more frequent and expressed gratitude to AmCham Taipei’s efforts in fostering industry collaborations as well as speaking on behalf of Taiwan in Washington, D.C. Besides private sector collaborations, there has been an increase of collaborations between the governments of the U.S. and Taiwan, including the Digital Economy Forum, the Talent Circulation Alliance and the issuance of a U.S.-Taiwan Joint Statement on containing the spread of COVID-19, which all signify closer ties between the two sides.
